massage

therapeutic

Massage therapy has been used in various forms for thousands of years to address stress reduction, pain relief, and injury rehab. In order to create a truly client-centered session and best address your individual needs I integrate a variety of techniques that may include:

Swedish Massage - a relaxing and therapeutic style of bodywork which focuses on the skin and superficial muscles of the body.

Deep Tissue Massage - focuses on the muscles, tendons, and ligaments of the body and requires a specific focal point such as a muscle grouping. Pressure does not have to be intense in order to be effective and can be pain free.

Abdominal Massage - tap into your core with therapeutic touch. Wonderful to include in a full body session or to focus on certain digestive issues. Gentle and relaxing.

Strain Counterstrain - a manual therapy technique that gently and effectively releases muscle spasms and reduces joint pain by passively shortening the affected muscle areas.

Integrated therapeutic massage sessions result in relief from aches and pains, increased circulation, decreased stress levels, enhanced mental clarity, and greater flexibility.

oncology

Cancer and cancer treatment affect every person differently. As a cancer survivor myself, I understand the challenges faced when learning about a diagnosis, undergoing treatment, and hopefully finding a way into recovery and beyond. Some benefits that cancer patients and survivors may receive are: reduced pain perception, fatigue, nausea, anxiety and symptoms of depression, and relief from chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN), even years out of treatment. Additionally some people experience increased sleep quality and improved range of motion from surgery related restrictions.

“Oncology Massage” incorporates modifications and adjustments to traditional massage techniques in order to meet the unique and changing needs of someone in treatment for cancer or with a history of cancer. A safe massage therapy care plan generally revolves around the side effects (both short- and long-term) of chemotherapy, radiation and surgery. The changes that might be made to a massage that make it an “oncology massage” can fall under any number of categories, but typically they will be related to session length, pressure, position of the client on the table, and areas of specific compromise or concern like mediports, skin and bone fragility, and risk of lymphedema.

IMPORTANT:
Oncology massage should only be provided by a Massage Therapist who has received training in the specifics of cancer and cancer treatment. This training is actually more about cancer and less about massage. A written treatment plan can be presented to your doctor for approval. I am a Preferred Practitioner with the Society for Oncology Massage and have completed over 200 hours of training and hands-on practical work in cancer, lymphedema, and end of life care.

Drainage

lymphatic

The lymphatic system is one of the key components of our immune system. Its primary function is the removal of toxins and waste from the body. Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) stimulates the flow of lymph fluid to align the lymphatic system with the natural rhythm of the body boosting your immunity.

When the lymphatic system is working effectively, you are better equipped to:

Fight colds, resist allergens and alleviate sinus issues

Reduce edema (fluid buildup and swelling) and lower inflammation

Experience an overall sense of well-being due to immune boosting white cell production

The pressure used during the application of MLD is lighter than what you may be used to when receiving other hands-on treatments and self-care techniques can be taught for home use. While this technique may benefit almost all people, it is especially helpful for those dealing with lymphedema (swelling caused by a lymphatic system blockage) due to cancer treatment, medical conditions, pregnancy, or postoperative side effects, and those experiencing known or undiagnosed autoimmune disorders.

*If you are seeking MLD to deal with cancer related lymphedema or you are at risk of lymphedema due to cancer related treatments please see the Oncology Massage page listed under Services.

massage

meditative

In today's modern world most of us live in a chronic state of heightened stress. Whether  dealing with minor day to day environmental factors such as a full email inbox or too many activities to haul the kids to, or weightier challenges like finances, relationships, and our health, we move from one thing to the next unaware of the impact on our bodies. Emotional and mental stressors play a key role in the physical tension we feel and, even more importantly, in the way our body functions.

My customized meditative massage creates a safe, comfortable space in which to become familiar with your body. You lay comfortably enveloped in warmth while I bring you through a guided meditation focused on each area of the body we are working. Explore your relationship with spatial awareness around the connections between your limbs and joints as well as your relationship with the space you occupy in the world.

Learning how to bring your focus back to your breath, back to your physical being, without judgment but simple curiosity, is the first step to changing subconscious patterns that inhibit physical ease and emotional release. The session is deeply relaxing and will allow your body to engage a deep parasympathetic response where true organ system function and cell healing can occur.
