Hi, I’m Amy, the woman behind As We Are Now
I’ve made self-care a way of life. It’s not always perfect or easy but it has helped me find peace and safety in my body and let’s me live my life fully without feeling at the mercy of what I’ve been through.
I’d love to show you how you can develop your own self-care strategies and practices to do the same!
Let’s talk self-care strategy.
When used strategically self-care practices and activities can help you reclaim your self-reliance and confidence as you learn to heal yourself physically, mentally, and emotionally in a way that is truly authentic to your values and interests.
And, when self-care is “informed” by your individual needs and goals, the complexities and challenges created by your breast cancer experience, and it aids in your recovery and healing you can make greater progress by positioning yourself as an asset of your own care team.
Common Self-Care Mistakes
-
Too much too soon.
Trying to tackle everything at once. It's overwhelming and often leaves you feeling ineffective and disappointed.
-
Forgetting the "Self"
Focusing on what worked for someone else even if their experiences, interests, needs, and goals are different than yours.
-
Under Pressure
Listening to the unhelpful noise of the "should’s" and "supposed-to's" that often come after a breast cancer experience.
What is Informed Self-Care?
Self-Care is a common buzz phrase these days and brings to mind images of bubble baths, pedicures, and luxurious afternoon naps. While these things can be amazing and indulgent, after a breast cancer diagnosis and treatment there are specific and life-changing concerns and impacts that this type of self-care simply doesn't address and can't solve.
That's where Informed Self-Care comes in.
Informed Self-Care involves a variety of activities and strategies that are informed by your individual needs and goals.
When it comes to life beyond a breast cancer diagnosis this often includes areas of physical, emotional, and mental recovery and healing.
Informed self-care allows you to play an active role in your own healing through education, information, and skills that are relevant to you.
How do you know if a self-care activity is "informed"? Instead of a "one size fits all" approach it is specific to your experience, your individuality, and your life in survivorship!
